How to Stay Steady in Chaotic Times: Wear the World Lightly

To stay steady in chaotic times, Christopher Grant suggests a morning or evening energy practice such as Qigong, yoga, meditation or a walk in nature, and starting with care for the physical body. He explains why in this 8-minute talk.

What Christopher talks about

Christopher begins with what happens to us in turbulent times. Our senses bring the outside world inside, and our conditioning and beliefs interpret it in an instant. If we like what we see, we tend to feel more elated. If we do not, we tend to feel worried and anxious. That affects the body, the mind and the nervous system.

He shares a teaching from Ram Dass. Whether this is a beginning or an ending, the work is the same: quiet the mind, open the heart and relieve suffering wherever you find it. Your morning or evening practice prepares you to be helpful during the day.

He also names the physical body as the place this work starts. Christopher says it is hard to show up for others when iron is depleted, the thyroid is not working properly or digestion is struggling. If you do not feel good or great energy most of the time, Christopher says it is worth finding out why and getting help: doctors for the body, coaches or therapists for the mind and a trusted friend for the heart.

If you feel anxious or drained most of the time, talk with a doctor, coach or therapist. If you feel unsafe or think about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US, or your local emergency number.

Questions people ask

What is an energy practice?

Christopher names Qigong, yoga, a walk in nature, and quiet time for prayer or meditation. Any practice you use in the morning or evening to reset yourself and return to yourself counts.

How does a daily practice help in chaotic times?

Christopher explains that what we see and hear affects our nervous system fast. Once we have learned to recover, he says, a practice becomes a stabilizing force that re-grounds us and clears the nervous system, so we can show up for others.

What if I feel anxious or drained most of the time?

Christopher says it is worth taking time to find out why, and maybe getting help. He says the work starts with the physical body, and gives the example of low iron, thyroid problems and digestive issues. He suggests doctors for the body, coaches or therapists for the mind and a trusted friend for the heart. If you feel unsafe or think about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US, or your local emergency number.
